Nikon 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro

The 40mm f2.8 DX Micro is a very nice “all around” prime lens. Although it doesn’t have the very wide aperture of some primes, f/2.8 is still more than adequate for most conditions. The focal length on a DX camera is good for street shooting, full length portraits, and outdoor architectural shots, plus it gives you a Macro lens in your bag suitable for close-up work (and it’s a true 1:1 macro, not just sort-of-macro). Plus, it’s small and lightweight so it doesn’t take up a ton of room in your bag and it’s inexpensive so it doesn’t take up a lot of room in your budget.
