A great FX-format portrait lens which when used with the crop sensor DX chip has a 128mm equivalent focal length. The fast f/1.4 aperture in tandem with a 9-blade diaphragm will yield excellent out-of-focus backgrounds. Among its other features, this lens includes Silent Wave Motor technology (which allows for fast, accurate, & quiet AF), internal focus, and super integrated coating (SIC) which reduces ghosting and flares, enhancing image clarity. Internal focus maintains the working distance throughout the focus range. This also helps to maintain the positioning of a polarizer or lens hood.
They say the main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live. I’m so jolly because I know where all the good lenses live. I’ve been limited to shooting with this around the shop but have had my hands on it enough to make some pretty strong initial impressions (I’m not one to let a lack of knowledge keep me from having a strong opinion). This one is a home run! That’s it. Get it. Buy it or rent it, but get it.
The autofocus is quick and the lens is sharp corner to corner by f/2.8. It has almost no distortion. It’s flare resistant, it has little aberration, it doesn’t have focus shift – it really is just about perfect. If you look at my review of the old Nikon 85 f/1.4 D, I said that lens was badly in need of a makeover. Well, it got it. This one is just about perfect.
