![]() The newest Sigma wide aperture standard zoom lens (not the preexisting one) with HSM motor for rapid autofocus. DG is a designation that Sigma uses on lenses featuring optical systems designed to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras. The Super Multi Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting, and the use of ELD and SLD glass provides excellent correction of all types of aberrations. It has a 9 bladed diaphragm for smooth out-of-focus highlights. Roger’s take: I haven’t shot this lens extensively yet, but when we got the first few copies we compared them to some Nikon 24-70s f/2.8 just out of curiosity. First, we were pleasantly suprised that the copies we received were all accurate focusers, and focused quite quickly at that. The lens seems well built and the rings feel solid. At f/4 and higher the lens is very sharp and can hang with the Nikon (we didn’t do any pixel-peeping, hair-splitting tests, but it looks good). At f/2.8 its clearly softer than the Nikon at f/2.8: I’d call it usable but the lens is clearly sharper at f/4. But given the price difference I’d consider it a reasonable alternative to the 24-70 Nikon.
