This Sigma lens is a wide-aperture, standard zoom lens with HSM motor for rapid autofocus and an optical system designed to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras. The super multi-layer coating reduces flare and ghosting, and its use of ELD and SLD glass provides excellent correction of all types of aberrations. It also has a nine-bladed diaphragm for smooth out-of-focus highlights.

First, we’ve been pleasantly suprised that the copies we received were all accurate focusers—-and focused quite quickly at that. The lens seems well-built, and the rings feel solid. At f/4 and higher, the lens is very sharp and can hang with the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 AF-S ED. (We didn’t do any pixel-peeping, hair-splitting tests, but it looks good.) At f/2.8 it’s clearly softer than the Nikon. I mean, I’d call it usable, but this lens is clearly sharper at f/4.
Given the price difference, though, I’d consider it a reasonable alternative to the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 AF-S ED .
