The Nikon 400mm f/2.8 AF-S VR has second-generation VR, Nikon’s most effective vibration reduction with automatic tripod-sensing. Not only is it faster focusing than its predecessors, but it also has Nano Crystal element coats to reduce flare and ghosting, a magnesium cast barrel to minimize weight, and three ED elements to minimize chromatic aberration.
It’s superbly sharp, focuses almost instantaneously—-it’s as good as it gets. It is also as heavy as it gets: we recommend a sturdy monopod or a good tripod with a gimbal head for support.

OK, you’d rather not take it hiking. And unless you’re really buffed up, you aren’t going to handhold it. But otherwise it’s breathtakingly sharp, autofocuses in a heart beat, has every convenience known, and may be the best long-range sports lens made.
Now that Nikon has perfected VR (Vibration Reduction) they need to start work on GR (Gravity Reduction). If they did that, I’d take this everywhere.
