The Nikon 500mm f/4G ED VR has Silent Wave Motor for fast auto-focusing, three extra-low dispersion elements and Nano Crystal Coating to reduce flare and ghosting. The Vibration Reduction system provides four stops of vibration reduction, and the automatic tripod-sensing mode reduces vibration induced by mirror slap and shutter release.

It’s everything you’ve heard: sharp as a tack and the VR system keeps it so steady you can shoot it handheld (at least for a while.)
It takes a 1.4x or 1.7x teleconverter just fine if there’s enough light available. It’s a large lens but not ridiculously heavy. You can shoot it on a sturdy ballhead (it doesn’t absolutely require a Wimberley type head.) This lens is my highest recommendation for wildlife photography – you won’t be disappointed.
