Nikon’s longest lens currently made, the 800mm f/5.6E FL ED AF-S VR features Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor autofocus system providing fast, accurate AF performance and instant manual focus override for switching between AF and MF. The in-lens VR provides up to 4-stops of correction and helps to minimize camera shake. The 800mm f/5.6 has an electromagnetic aperture mechanism which provides greater exposure control stability when shooting at faster continuous frame rates.
Optically, the 800mm f/5.6 has an advanced lens construction that uses two fluorite lens elements in the first and second position that minimize weight and chromatic aberrations. Two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements are also used to further limit optical aberrations while increasing image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity, and Nikon’s Nano Crystal Coat prevents surface and internal reflections, as well as ghosting.
Also included with the rental of the 800mm f/5.6E FL ED AF-S VR is the Nikon TC800-1.25E ED AF-S teleconverter designed specifically for use with the 800mm. When used, it increases the lens’ focal length to 1000mm f/7.1 on FX and 1500mm on DX crop-frame cameras. Through the use of an ED lens element, image quality remains very high, and the electromagnetic aperture mechanism is fully functional when using the teleconverter.
Please Note: Autofocus when using the TC800-1.25E ED AF-S teleconverter is only possible with f/8 compatible cameras (D4, D3-series, D800, D700, D600).
A lens you’ll rarely need, which is why you’re probably looking to rent it. Image quality is of course great, and autofocus performance is very fast even with the included 1.25X teleconverter. However, it’s $18K, so it damn well better be great. But hey, they throw in a teleconverter! What a deal!
