This is the third version of Nikon’s 2x autofocus teleconverter, increasing focal length by 2x and reducing aperture by two f-stops. It maintains autofocus with all Nikon digital cameras. The version III contains an aspheric element that is claimed to provide superior image quality.
If you haven’t used a teleconverter before, please read about the limitations they have here.
Only works with the following Nikkor lenses:
- Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 AF-S VR II
- Nikon 70-200mm f/4G AF-S VR
- Nikon 200-400mm f/4 AF-S VR II
- Nikon 200mm f/2 AF-S VR
- Nikon 300mm f/2.8 AF-S VR II
- Nikon 300mm f/4 AF-S
- Nikon 400mm f/2.8 AF-S VR
- Nikon 500mm f/4 AF-S VR
- Nikon 600mm f/4 AF-S VR
Please folks: If the lens you want to use this with isn’t listed above, don’t order it. It doesn’t work with the 80-400mm. It has never worked with the 80-400. Its not going to work with the 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 ED AF VR when you try it, nor (I swear it’s happened) will it work well with a 12-24mm f/4G AF-S DX.
The 1.4X is the teleconverter I recommend with few reservations. You can use it with any of the lenses above and have just a little deterioration in image quality (and of course give up 1 stop of light). The 2X converter I really recommend only on the f/2.8 telephoto primes and the 200mm f/2.0 lens. You can certainly use it on some of the others (although autofocus may be impaired or not work at all depending on the camera you’re shooting). The 1.7X is the compromise. You lose 1.5 stops of aperture and give up some image quality, although not a huge amount.
Remember, too, that a teleconverter gives you a double whammy: your exposure time and the focal length of the lens are both increased. This makes technical issues more likely so a sturdy tripod, mirror lock up, etc. are often critical to getting sharp images.
