The Nikon 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR is a high-quality, all-in-one superzoom designed for use with Nikon DX cameras. With an effective focal length of 27-450mm, the lens gives DX shooters a great 16.7x zoom coverage while still retaining a reasonable f/5.6 aperture at the long end. This makes it perfectly useable even in cloudy conditions, especially when considering it has the Nikon’s second generation VR II stabilizer built in. The lens also features a zoom-lock.
The optical formula consists of three ED elements, three aspherical elements, and Nikon’s Super Integrated Coating, providing quality images with a high degree of sharpness and minimum optical aberrations. With a Silent Wave autofocusing motor, the 18-300mm works great for both still and video shooting, allowing silent and unobtrusive focusing.
Well, it zooms all the way from 18 to 300mm. That’s a useful thing, and if you just have to have a “one lens” solution for your DX camera this is a good choice. Probably better than the Tamron 18-270. Probably not as sharp as the Nikon 18-200 but then it has a lot more range. If you want great image quality and a 15X zoom, well, you just aren’t going to get it. Such a thing does not exist. This one gives you pretty good image quality from 18mm to 150mm, adequate quality to 200mm or so. From 200mm up, it will take pictures. Not ‘print me’ sharp pictures, but pictures.
If there is any possible way you’re willing to change lenses, you’ll be happier with a Nikon 70-300 VR for the long end, and maybe a 16-85 for the long end. If you’re only going to use the 18-200 range, then the 18-200 VR II is cheaper, a lot lighter, and as good or better image quality.
But be warned: this is not a little lens. It’s nearly two pounds of Nikon goodness strapped around your neck. One might want to reconsider taking just one lens if weight is the primary concern.
