The Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG HSM OS A1 Lens for Nikon is the update to the popular Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 telephoto zoom lens. One of the first Sigma lenses geared toward sports shooting, it is well-suited for fast-moving subjects that often require a mix of longer range and wide-aperture control.
Featuring a dust- and splash-proof construction, this lens is well suited for use in outdoor and adverse conditions. The design features rubber focus and zoom rings and conveniently located mode switches to enhance usability with the lens. A built-in Optical Stabilizer provides a four-stop-equivalent reduction in the appearance of camera shake and the Hyper Sonic AF Motor provides fast, smooth, and quiet auto focusing for faster performance that benefits not only photographers, but videographers as well.
This lens is also compatible with the Sigma USB Dock, which allows you to use the Sigma Pro Optimization software to tailor certain lens settings to your own shooting needs.
The new version of the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 OS lens is optically identical to the old version. You do get several improvements that may be worthwhile. The first doesn’t sound like much, but it is: an improved tripod collar that really helps you handhold the lens if you choose to do that. The second is adjustability on the Sigma USB dock which allows you to microfocus adjust for 4 different focusing distances at each of 4 zoom ranges. It also lets you adjust AF speed (faster, but perhaps less accurate or slower and perhaps more accurate) and the OS system (I still haven’t figured out exactly what the 3 different OS settings do, but they do change things).
The bottom line: if you aren’t planning on getting the dock and setting the lens up for maximum accuracy, you’ll probably be just as well off renting the less expensive older version Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 OS . There’s no optical difference.
