The Zeiss 135mm f/2 APO Sonnar offers outstanding clarity of detail, high contrast, and high resolution at any aperture, making it a perfect choice for medium-range portraits, landscape, and reportage photography.
The lens can capture subjects up to a scale of 1:4 and has been built based on Carl Zeiss’s proven “floating elements” design and features eleven elements in eight groups. Because this lens is an apochromat (APO), chromatic aberrations (axial chromatic aberrations) are corrected with elements of special glass materials with anomalous partial dispersion.
As with all other SLR lenses in the ZF.2 line-up, the Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating, as well as the sophisticated treatment of the elements’ edges with a deep-black special lacquer, make the Zeiss 135mm f/2 APO Sonnar resistant to reflections and stray light.
The ZF.2 designation adds a microchip to the lens that automatically lets the camera know time, aperture setting, and manual exposure settings, including those for cameras that are not AI-compatible. Since the lens now transmits the EXIF data photographers no longer need to set the parameters manually. Optically, the ZF.2 lenses are identical to the original ZF lenses, so if these functions aren’t important to you, save some money by getting the original ZF mount.
Sale of Zeiss ZF.2 lenses: We are a registered Zeiss dealer and sell new in box, fully warrantied Zeiss ZF.2 lenses and now stock for immediate delivery in our For Sale section. If the lens is listed, a new in box copy of the lens is in stock for immediate shipment. If it is not listed, it is backordered, although we still have rental copies available.
The Zeiss 135mm f/2 APO-Sonnar is a superb lens. It has one of the highest resolutions we’ve tested overall and the corners are amazingly good, even wide open. You definitely pay for what you get, though. The Nikon 135mm f/2 is a superb lens and while it doesn’t have quite the resolution as the Zeiss wide open, it is less than half the price and autofocuses. (The 135mm f/2 is always on my list of the best value lenses available.)
For video shooters, particularly, this lens is going to be a superb tool. Photographers wanting the very best will be interested, too. The optics are as good as it gets.
