Nikon 1 V2

Available Today

The Nikon 1 V2 is the enthusiast-level update to the original Nikon 1 V1. While its predecessor had somewhat limiting controls that required menu diving to make basic mode adjustments, the V2 sees the addition of a dedicated Mode dial for quick changes. It’s based around a 14.2MP CX-format CMOS sensor that offers an integrated hybrid autofocus system that provides both phase (73-point) and contrast-detection (135-point) autofocus. It’s capable of shooting up to 15fps with full continuous autofocus, or up to 60fps if focus point is locked. It offers an ISO range of 160-6400, allowing continued use even in low light.

The V2 offers similar video specifications as the V1, recording up to 1080/30p in H.264/MPEG-4. There’s an in-camera stereo mic for audio recording with level adjustments, as well as a 3.5mm input for connecting an external mic. Carried over from the V1 are the specialty movie modes such as Movie Slow Motion and Motion Snapshot, allowing for some fun creative results.

Physically, the V2 offers a noticeable difference with improved ergonomics over its precursor. There’s an actual front grip that aids in holding the camera, a built-in pop-up flash for quick fill, and the dedicated Mode dial. It still uses the same great 0.47" 1440K-dot EVF viewfinder with 100% coverage and built-in diopter adjustment for traditional shooting methods. Also brought back is the 3.0" 921K rear LCD for those who prefer to shot that method. The V2 sees the addition of a couple new specialty shooting modes that could prove to be pretty useful. There’s a Slow View mode that essentially slows down your subject to capture a precise moment in time, and a Smart Photo Selector that shoots 20 frames with one shutter press and selects the best 5 images.

Like several other Nikon cameras, the V2 allows WiFi connectivity with the optional Nikon WU-1b Wireless Mobile Adapter (separate rental item) that enables wireless image transfer to a compatible device, as well as live monitoring and remote triggering of the shutter. While the V2 still takes SDHC / XC memory cards, it does use a different battery with less capacity than the V1. The new EN-EL21 lithium battery provides roughly 310 shots per charge.
