The Metabones Canon EF to Sony E Speed Booster allows you to mount any Canon EF-mount lens to compatible Sony NEX E-mount cameras and camcorders. While electronic communication between the Sony camera and Canon lens is provided, like the other Metabones EF/NEX Adapter, what separates this adapter from all the others is that the adapter effectively increases your lens’ maximum aperture by 1 stop and widens your focal length by .71×. In other words, a Canon 50mm f/1.2 L would become a 35.5mm f/0.9 lens. With optics designed by Caldwell Photographic (the company behind the Coastal Optics 60mm Macro MTF reportedly improves with the Speed Booster.
Like other Metabones EF/NEX Adapters, it allows full control of aperture when shooting in A and M exposure modes, or lets the camera control aperture if shooting in P or S exposure modes. Not only do you have aperture control, but it’s also imbedded in the EXIF data. The Metabones adapter also supports the Image Stabilization function of compatible lenses, allowing you to shoot at slower shutter speeds and help eliminate camera shake. The adapter itself is powered by the camera, so no additional power source is needed. It has a metal barrel construction, with both mounts being metal as well. Since the aperture blades change as you make adjustments, there is a “wide open button” which functions as the opposite of a depth-of-field preview button.
Autofocus is supported with the adapter, but with severe limitations (such as NO CONTINUOUS AUTOFOCUS). At this time, AF is not reliable with Sony NEX Camcorders, though works (slowly) with the Sony NEX photo cameras with newer Canon brand (no third-party) lenses. Sony NEX cameras cannot display aperture values beyond f/1.0. If a f/1.2 Canon EF lens is used with the Speed Booster, the resulting aperture is f/0.9 but the camera body displays f/1.0. Please familiarize yourself with the full list of limitations and the supported lens list found here.
This adapter also has intermittent problems with the Zeiss ZE lenses. Use at your own risk.
Please Note: Canon EF-S mount lenses will NOT work with this adapter. If you try to use it on your Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens and report that it will not mount or function, we will apologize, but not issue a refund.
For a more detailed report on the lens, see Roger’s blog post on it HERE.
WARNING: THIS ADAPTER DOES NOT ALLOW SLAM INFINITY FOCUS. EVERY LENS WILL BE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT (THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO BE THIS WAY). YOU WILL BE CHARGED IF ANY INFINITY FOCUS ADJUSTMENT IS DONE TO THE ADAPTER.
