Common Uses. Neutral Density filters are commonly used for slowing shutter speeds to capture movement in subjects like waterfalls, clouds, and cars, and they also allow the use of wider apertures in bright conditions to decrease depth of field. ND filters decrease the effective ISO of film with ISO ratings above 400 so that you can use it in bright outdoor conditions, and they let cine and video cameras capture bright subjects like snow and sand without overexposing the image.
