The Leica TL is a high-quality mirrorless camera in Leica’s L-mount system. It’s an update to the T, and the predecessor to the TL2. Key features include:
What’s New? To be frank, not a whole lot. The internal buffer has been increased to 32GB, continuous autofocus has been improved, and the TL offers cross-platform compatibility with SL lenses.
16.3MP APS-C CMOS Sensor. This sensor produces high-quality images in a wide range of lighting conditions thanks to its ISO range of 100-12,500. The on-sensor contrast-detection autofocus system ensures accuracy, but doesn’t have any sort of phase detection. Like other Leica cameras, the TL captures RAW images in the open-source DNG format. You can record Full HD 1920 × 1080p or 1280 × 720p video in MP4 format at 30 fps.
Leica TL Mount. Leica’s T-series L-mount lenses (separate rental items) are high-quality lenses you’d expect to bear the Leica name, and they feature autofocus capability this time around. The Leica TL does not natively accept Leica M-mount lenses, but you can use the Leica M-Adapter L for Leica TL / SL (separate rental item) to adapt them.
Solid Aluminum Alloy Unibody Design. While image quality is obviously an important feature in a camera, the Leica TL’s handmade build makes it one of a kind. It has only four physical controls (two dials, a shutter button, and a record button), with all other functions being controlled via the large 3.7-inch LCD touchscreen. It features a built-in pop-up flash unit with a guide number of 14.76’ @ ISO 100, as well as a standard ISO hot shoe for attaching an external flash. Additionally, the hot shoe enables the use of the optional Leica Visoflex Typ 020 EVF for a more classic shooting approach.
Other Notable Features. The Leica TL features built-in IEEE 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity for image transfer and camera control from smartphone or computer. The camera takes a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that’s rated for about 400 shots per charge. For image storage, the camera has 32 GB of internal memory and accepts SD/SDHC/XC memory cards for additional storage capability.
