The Middle Child. The unique features of Sony’s FX3 and FX6 make them perfect for their particular production uses, however, the FX5 combines those features to perform in an even wider range of applications. To start, the FX5 drops the 12MP sensor found on the FX3/6, and replaces it with a stunning 16.6MP stacked CMOS sensor. While the FX3 and FX5 share a similar, compact build, the controls and menu layout are Alpha-series inspired for more intuitive adjustments. This camera opted out of the still image capture capabilities and physical shutter of the FX3, instead replacing it with an electronic shutter and practically zero still image functionality. The FX6, the more professional option of this series, is the main muse for the FX5’s menu, features, and operation. While this is true, the FX5 was designed without the built-in ND filter, which is replaced by 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization, and SDI connections.
Handle Unit. The included Sony XLR-H2 XLR Handle Unit offers 32-bit float recording with impressive dynamic range, the first of its kind. The ergonomic handle not only allows you to shoot handheld footage, it offers dual XLR inputs, a mic mount, and several physical controls.
Recording in 4:2:2 10-bit 5K at 60p. The FX5 can record internal Open Gate 5K at 60 fps in a high-bitrate 4:2:2 10-bit XAVC HS-L codec. Lower bitrate 4K/120p recording is available and scaling down to 1080p allows for frame rates up to 240fps.
RAW Video. Shoot 16-bit 2K-RAW and 4.6K-RAW video when paired with the Atomos Ninja TX 5.2-inch HDMI/SDI Monitor Recorder. Recording RAW provides an enormous amount of detail and information, and it gives you over fifteen stops of dynamic range in your footage.
Dual CFexpress Type A/SDXC Card Slots. The Sony FX5 uses the latest CFexpress Type A and SD/SDXC/SDHC media for the highest bitrate recording and offers a variety of recording options for file spanning and redundancy. The CFexpress slots double as SDXC slots for less demanding frame rates and bitrates.
Built-in Wireless Streaming. Whether controlling via a smartphone or tablet, streaming wirelessly to a client monitor, or wirelessly transferring files to editorial, the FX5 is prepared to handle all of your wireless needs with built-in Wi-Fi.
Monitor and Control. As of November 2023, you can use Sony’s Monitor & Control app for Android and iOS to turn your smartphone into a wireless video monitor. It lets you use your phone to remotely control the camera, display and control clips from the camera, start and stop recording, adjust white balance, change ISO, adjust color settings, and swap between LUTs.
