6th Gen Action Cam. The Action 6 is similar to the Action 5 in many ways. They both have three built-in microphones, the same touchscreens, and nearly identical video specs. This iteration of the DJI Osmo Action camera, however, offers a unique, and larger, 1/1.1 square sensor. This allows for versatile cropping of 4K footage without quality loss and also improves low light performance. There are some physical refinements in the Action 6 as well. The quick release is dual-direction and more versatile than in the prior model and the side door has been redesigned with a much more secure latching system. Overall the camera is taller to accommodate the larger sensor. There is also slightly more internal storage (support for microSD cards up to 1 TB remains the same). Charging time is slightly faster but it is otherwise the same battery and performance found in the Action 5.
A First for Action Cams: Variable Iris. To improve low-light performance, DJI boldly decided to use actual lens blades inside the tiny lens so that shooters had access to both f/2 and f/4 maximum apertures. Action cams typically have fixed apertures, limiting control over depth of view and exposure. You can let the camera choose which is best for a given scenario or you can manually change it. This design ushers in a whole new family of interchangeable lenses. It also makes the Action 6 slightly heavier.
New Modes. Video performance and stabilization features are virtually the same between the Action 6 and Action 5 but there are a couple of new modes for night and long-exposure shooters. The first is Starburst Mode, which will create cool stylized points of light without a filter, and SuperNight Mode for improved noise reduction in very dark scenes. There are also a few more field-of-view options, including one that has the Dewarp feature but for ultrawide shots.
A Reliable Flagship. With dual touchscreens, flexible D-Log M for grading, 4K slow-motion (plus 32x super slow-motion in full HD), and multiple stabilization modes, the DJI Osmo Action 6 is an ideal choice for sports, traveling, vlogging, and underwater shooting.
