The Sony Alpha a7 V is a high-resolution, full-frame mirrorless camera and an update to the a7 IV. It is a true hybrid shooter, with strong photo and video performance. Key features include:

  • Partially Stacked 33MP Exmor RS CMOS sensor
  • 4K60p 10-bit video with S-Log3 and S-Cinetone
  • 7.5-stop, 5-axis image stabilization
  • Upgraded AF and AI subject recognition

What’s Changed? The Sony a7 V offers several improvements over its predecessor, the a7 IV, including the latest autofocus tech taken from its flagship siblings. It boasts Sony’s first partially stacked sensor, which results in faster readout speeds and reduced rolling shutter. The new processor enhances image quality, dynamic range (up to 16 stops), color accuracy, and white balance. This boost to processing also benefits videographers, with 7K-oversampled 4K video and high-speed 4K120p when in Super35 mode. Also, the image stabilization system has been tweaked for up to 7.5 stops of camera shake compensation. Precise shake control overall is improved thanks to faster communication between the lens and camera.

Superior Sensor with Processor Prowess. Offering high-speed circuitry above and below the sensing layer, the partially stacked image sensor provides readouts fast enough for 1/16,000th-of-a-second shooting speeds with blackout-free burst shooting at up to 30 frames per second – all with full autofocus tracking. The processor is equipped with AI-based Real-Time Recognition and Real-Time Tracking to support autofocus performance. Recognition has been improved by approximately 30% when compared to the α7 IV (bird recognition has improved by 50%). Deep learning-based tech has been incorporated to improve not only light source estimation but also for a more consistent white balance between frames, even in challenging conditions.

No Room for Error with High-Density AF Point System. This camera is stacked with 759 autofocus points in a high-density focal plane phase-detection system that covers 94% of the image area. Even with such a large sensor, the processor is able to keep up with very fast subjects. When working in trickier environments, a flexible focus feature allows you to create a custom focus area. Set your shape and size and enjoy extremely accurate results for unique situations.

Flexible Filming Features. When recording full frame, the a7 V provides 3.3x the data required for 4K so that footage can be compressed without moiré, jaggies, and other artifacts. When in Super35 mode, you can internally record up to 5x slow motion video (10x when shooting in Full HD). A newly-designed reference mic offers amazing noise reduction with selectable wind-noise control. For extended shooting, this camera sports a unique graphite heatsink to regulate the camera’s temperature. S-Cinetone and S-Log3 are available for grading control and are matched with FX-series cameras.

Practical Matters: Build, Power, and Interface. Battery life has been improved by 23% when compared to the a7 IV. This camera still uses the NP-FZ100 battery, but its usage is more efficient thanks to some design adjustments that reduce power consumption. The lens mount is more rigid and can handle heavier lenses while the grip has been altered slightly for comfort. As with many Sony cameras, the a7 V is weather-sealed. There are two memory card “combo slots” for both CFexpress Type A and UHS-II SD cards and the hot shoe is of the Multi Interface design to accommodate digital mics. Of significant improvement over the a7 IV is reliable, high-speed Wi-Fi with 2×2 MIMO support. Live streaming is capable up to 4K30p directly over USB-C. In addition to this, the fully-articulating touchscreen, full-size HDMI port, headphone and microphone ports, and combo electronic/IBIS shake correction, all help make the a7 V a stellar all-rounder for shooters who like to take on a wide variety of subjects.
