The Biggest Releases in Photo and Video for Spring 2025

Published April 14, 2025

Many big announcements in the photography and videography scene happen in the spring. With WPPI for the photo world and NAB for the video world, most brands schedule their big releases around these trade shows. We were back in attendance at both NAB and WPPI this year and were grateful to meet so many of our customers. We were also excited to get our hands on some of the latest tech for the photo and video worlds. Because of our attendance and ability to see and touch some of these most significant announcements, we figured it was time to highlight some of our favorite new products – so buckle up because this will be a particularly lengthy post. In no particular order —

EOS R50 V

Canon is highlighting the EOS R50 V mirrorless camera as a dedicated Vlogging Kit aimed at content creators seeking an integrated solution for video production. The EOS R50 V is a compact mirrorless camera that features a 24.2MP APS-C sensor, oversampled UHD 4K 30p video recording capabilities, and advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus. It also comes with several key accessories designed to streamline vlogging workflows.

Canon RF-S 14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ

Canon has launched the RF-S 14-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM PZ lens, a compact and versatile zoom designed to complement its APS-C mirrorless cameras, particularly the R50 V, offering a 22-48mm equivalent range and optimized for video with its power zoom and image stabilization features. The lens’s optical design, featuring aspherical and ultra-low dispersion elements, along with Super Spectra Coating, aims to minimize aberrations and enhance image clarity, while its close focusing capabilities and quiet STM autofocus system further solidify its appeal for both still and video content creators seeking a portable, high-performance option with a limited budget.

Canon RF 20mm f/1.4L VCM

Canon has designed the RF 20mm f/1.4 L VCM lens to meet the demands of both photographers and videographers, offering a fast ultra-wide-angle prime optimized for modern hybrid shooting workflows. This L-series lens emphasizes high image quality through advanced optical elements like UD and BR glass to minimize chromatic aberrations and specialized coatings to reduce flare, while its f/1.4 aperture benefits low-light performance and depth of field control. The lens also provides close-focusing capabilities down to 7.9 inches and utilizes responsive autofocus, catering to various applications.

Canon PowerShot V1

Canon has launched the PowerShot V1, a compact camera aimed squarely at content creators, vloggers, and live streamers, built around a newly developed 22.3MP 1.4-inch CMOS sensor stated to be significantly larger than typical 1-inch sensors found in comparable models. This larger sensor, designed to enhance image detail, dynamic range, and low-light performance, is paired with Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, featuring pupil detection for reliable focusing. The V1 integrates a versatile 16-50mm equivalent f/2.8-4.5 optically stabilized lens, a built-in 3-stop ND filter, and offers full-width 4K 30p video recording (or 4K 60p with a 1.4x crop), including 10-bit Canon Log 3 options. Further catering to its target audience, the camera incorporates active cooling for extended shooting times, an articulating touchscreen, microphone input, and headphone output, and can achieve continuous shooting speeds up to 30 fps, positioning it as a feature-rich, portable solution for video and photo creation.

Fujifilm GFX100RF

In a move merging high-end imaging with everyday practicality, Fujifilm has launched the GFX100RF. This camera notably houses a 102MP medium format sensor—typically found in larger systems—within a sleek, rangefinder-inspired body. By integrating a fixed wide-angle lens (28mm equivalent F4 lens), Fujifilm aims to deliver exceptional resolution in a simplified, portable package designed for photographers prioritizing image fidelity on the move, including street and travel specialists. The Fuji GFX100RF represents an effort to blend the medium format’s detail-rich output with a user-friendly design. As for who might need a medium format sensor in a fixed lens body, I’m not particularly sure — but I’m personally excited nonetheless.

GoPro Anamorphic Lens Mod

GoPro generally releases a new camera every year with small updates, but this year, they’ve done something different—they released a lens mod. Specifically, the GoPro HERO13 has the option of using an anamorphic lens mod, allowing you to ‘de-squeeze’ the frame, helping with the wide-angle distortion and giving you a more cinematic feel. This is a very small announcement and release compared to the rest on this list, but it was a fun find nonetheless.

Blackmagic Pyxis 12K

Blackmagic Design is expanding its camera line with the PYXIS 12K, integrating a high-resolution 12K full-frame sensor into its versatile box camera design. The 36 x 24mm RGBW sensor (12,288 x 8040 native resolution) is paired with a Canon EF, ARRI PL, or Leica L mount. The camera also promises 16 stops of dynamic range and dual-native ISO up to 25,600 for enhanced low-light capture. Blackmagic emphasizes the sensor’s ability to produce rich colors and accurate skin tones and enable creative choices like shallow depth of field or uncropped anamorphic shooting. The unit retains the customizable side plates characteristic of the PYXIS form factor and is designed to be the perfect sub-$6K camera for the professional filmmaker.

DaVinci Resolve 20

While not a product we rent, Blackmagic also released their latest in post-production software with the announcement of DaVinci Resolve 20. The latest update includes over 100 new tools and updates from AI Audio Assistant to tools within the Multi-User Collaboration features. There are way too many tools to go over in this post, but the latest update, like all the previous ones, is free to users, so go to their website and give it a try.

Sony VENICE Extension System Mini

Sony has unveiled the VENICE 2 Extension System Mini, a compact and lightweight sensor block extension designed to significantly enhance mobility for professional cine-style capture. Compatible with the VENICE 2 8K and 6K cameras, this new system allows filmmakers to position their cameras in previously inaccessible tight spaces, ideal for handheld, gimbal, and vehicle-mounted rigs. The extension leverages the VENICE 2’s full-frame 8.6K sensor, offering uncompromised image quality in a 70% smaller form factor compared to its predecessor. Key features include detachable cables for flexible positioning, a drop-in ND filter system for rapid exposure control, and a built-in gyro sensor that captures tilt and roll metadata for smoother on-the-go footage and improved post-production workflows. However, this system sits at $25,000 but is expected ‘soon.’

Atomos TX-RX 4K/HD Wireless Video Monitoring Transmitter & Receiver Set

Atomos has announced the launch of Atomos TX-RX, a 4K wireless video transmitter and receiver system designed to streamline video monitoring and production workflows. The TX-RX delivers low-latency HD-SDI and 4K HDMI video over 5G Wi-Fi transmission for wireless on-set monitoring over long distances. It transmits up to 4Kp30 over HDMI and 1080p60 over SDI, maintaining image quality for accurate monitoring and capture. With a range of up to 300 meters and latency as low as 0.06 seconds, it delivers a robust, real-time signal for professional video applications. The Atomos TX-RX is available for pre-order now and will begin shipping from June 2025, with a set priced at USD $599.

Laowa Wide-Angle Lenses

Venus Optics launched four new wide-angle Laowa cinema lenses for VistaVision cameras on March 18, 2025. The lenses – Laowa 9mm T5.8 VV Cine, 10mm T2.9 Zeo-D VV Cine, 12mm T2.8 Lite Zero-D VV Cine, and 14mm T2.6 Zero-D VV Cine provide wide fields of view and standardized features like a 0.8 gear mod and an 80mm front diameter. Compatible with Arri PL, Canon EF, Canon RF, L-Mount, Nikon Z, and Sony E cameras, the lenses are priced between $1,499 and $1,699 and are available for preorder, with shipping starting soon.

Profoto L1600D

Yes, this was announced over a year ago, but it’s finally available for purchase, so it felt worth including. Profoto has entered the filmmaking market by launching its L1600D Daylight Mono-LED Light, a powerful 1600W LED fixture designed for professional cinema lighting. The company, known for its high-quality strobes, is now offering a streamlined, all-in-one IP54-rated unit boasting a 5700K CCT for pure light quality, multiple control options, and compatibility with both Profoto and Bowens modifiers. The L1600D eliminates the need for a separate ballast, featuring an integrated design and swivel yoke, prioritizing speed and ease of use on set through its ergonomic build and robust performance.

Godox KNOWLED M1000R

Godox has launched the KNOWLED M1000R, a high-output RGB LED monolight aimed at professional filmmakers, broadcasters, and set designers. The 1000W fixture boasts a significant 20,400-lux output at 3.3 feet, measured with a reflector at 5600K, promising to deliver intense and versatile lighting for demanding production environments. The Godox M1000R looks to bring high-output RGB lighting into an affordable package, with a high color rendering index (CRI) of 95. However, you won’t likely see the Godox M1000R hitting the streets until October, and at a price of $2,800.

Godox KNOWLED MG6K Bi-Color LED Monolight

If you’ve scoffed at the 1,000W power output of the above-mentioned M1000R, you might be more impressed with their other light fixture, the Godox MG6K. Bolstering an incredible 5,000W, Godox has released little additional info on their latest big lighting fixture. However, its 64-lb weight and $11,650 price tag will be heavy on your back and your wallet.

Aputure STORM XT52

However, perhaps the best value for a high-output light fixture comes from our friends at Aputure, with their STORM XT52 announcement. Designed to meet the rigorous demands of large-scale film and television productions, this 5200W fixture delivers a powerful, full-white output with a color temperature range of 2500K to 10,000K, offering filmmakers precise control over their lighting environment. Priced at less than $11K, the STORM XT52 is likely to be the new standard in lighting for productions requiring high output of light.
